Better Approaches to Solving Your Conflicts

Everyone interacts with the legal system at some point, whether through a speeding ticket, conflicts, or serious charges. For 25 years, ReDirections of Rockingham County has offered programs to reduce litigation and incarceration, promoting more effective problem-solving alternatives. Mediation can settle business, education, and personal disputes. When court is necessary, creative interventions often exceed jail sentences, as demonstrated in our domestic violence class and the upcoming Mental Health Court starting in November 2018. We're excited that ReDirections and the Alamance Dispute Settlement Center have partnered to create a regional center for Rockingham and Alamance counties.

Comprehensive Services in Rockingham County for 30+ Years

ReDirections was established just over 29 years ago in response to the critical issue of prison overcrowding within the state. Constructing new prisons proved to be costly and did little to aid in the rehabilitation of those caught in the prison system. As a result, when the State reached out to a group of visionary citizens in Rockingham County to launch a program aimed at both punishing and rehabilitating nonviolent offenders within the community, they embraced the opportunity, leading to the formation of ReDirections. In 1995, ReDirections expanded its offerings by introducing District Court mediation as a second program.

Cases such as Simple Assault, Injury to Personal Property, Trespassing, and Communicating Threats can be resolved more effectively when the involved parties willingly agree to meet and work toward a solution that serves everyone's best interests. Given the broad applicability of mediation, it didn't take long for ReDirections to diversify its services further. Today, alongside District Court mediation, we provide Medicaid Appeals mediation, Eviction mediation, Conflict Resolution training, and a Batterer's Intervention class.

Most people don't end their careers in the same field they started, and Alexey is no exception. She began as a high school English teacher but discovered her passion for helping animals and working in the nonprofit sector while volunteering for the Humane Society. Alexey first joined ReDirections as Executive Director in 1994, during its early days, before leaving to work for the Humane Society. After ten years, she returned to a much-expanded ReDirections. Now, she volunteers for Triad Golden Retriever Rescue and spends her free time walking Casey, her rescue Golden, or cleaning up his hair.

Since 2017, Guilio Dattero has led AMENDS, a domestic violence prevention program at ReDirections, where he previously worked in 2011-12. A former law enforcement officer, he brings firsthand experience with domestic violence cases to his impactful lessons, resulting in no AMENDS graduate re-offending—a remarkable achievement. In his free time, Guilio enjoys working out at the Reidsville YMCA, writing crime novels and humorous poetry, and spending summers at the beach with his wife Cathy.
